Set below street level on a steep, oak-covered slope in Portola Valley, this site's biggest challenge became its greatest asset. Rather than fight the grade, we let the landscape unfold with it, reshaping circulation before adding a pool, a vegetable garden, and a generous lawn for the family dogs. The result is a sequence of outdoor spaces that meander naturally through the hillside, settling naturally beneath the canopy of mature oaks.
